What is UTXO?

The Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) model underpins Bitcoin transactions. Transactions consist of inputs and outputs: inputs reference previous UTXOs, and outputs generate new UTXOs. Each UTXO has a Bitcoin value and a script defining spending conditions.When transactions are verified and added to the blockchain, used UTXOs are marked as spent and removed from the UTXO set, while new ones are added, ready for future transactions. This ensures all Bitcoin is accounted for without double-spending.
