There was an old saying on Wall Street “financial markets are driven by two powerful emotions – greed and fear”.

Developed by CNNMoney, the fear and freed Index is used to measure the two main emotions that affect how much investors are willing to pay for stocks. Too much fear can sink stocks well below where they should be. When investors get greedy, they can bid up stock prices way too far.

The Fear and Greed Index is based on seven factors that come together to form a final score, including Stock Price Momentum,Stock Price Strength, Stock Price Breadth, Put and Call Options, Junk Bond Demand, Market Volatility, and Safe Haven Demand.

People tend to become greedy for the market rises, and thus sell irrationally. Through the fear and greed index, people can be rescued from this emotion.

How the Fear and Greed Index Works?

the Fear and Greed Index is computed by taking an equal-weighted average of seven factors. Each factor is measured on a scale from 0 to 100. It’s considered as more greed than usual if the reading is higher than 50.

If the index shows "extreme fear", it may indicate that investors are too worried, but this may be a buying opportunity.

If the index shows that investors have become "too greedy", it means that the market is about to adjust.
