What is Tezos (XTZ)?

Tezos is an energy-efficient proof of stake (dPoS) layer 1 blockchain, built for smart contracts and decentralized applications.

While Tezos has a similar target audience as Ethereum, the network sets itself apart via its consensus mechanism and its self amendment capabilities that allow the network to implement major upgrades with no need for a hard fork. Like Ethereum, Tezos can be used to create a token, dApps, games, and NFT projects. 

XTZ is the native asset of the Tezos network. The token is required to participate in the blockchain’s proof of stake consensus mechanism, pay transaction fees, or participate in governance and is also used as a unit of exchange across the network.
